SheWrites is a community for women writers of every ilk. Most recently, they’ve put out a call for quotes, by or about women.

Here are some of the best in the comment section so far:

“Never grow a wishbone, daughter, where your backbone ought to be.” – Clementine Paddleford

“You try to be good, to be good and loving and nice and not hard, not tough, a sweet nice girl, not ugly, not full of ugliness, but people make it impossible.” — Michelle Tea

“I can be changed by what happens to me. I refuse to be reduced by it.” – Maya Angelou

“I was a late bloomer. But anyone who blooms at all, ever, is very lucky.” — Sharon Olds

“For a writer who’s used to being in her own head, being around other people all the time can feel like a loss of self.” — Kristal Brent Zook, author of Black Women’s Lives

“Considering how dangerous everything is, nothing is really very frightening. ” – Gertrude Stein

“The jump is so frightening between where I am and where I want to be…because of all I may become I will close my eyes and leap!” – – Mary Anne Radmacher

“Don’t compromise yourself. You are all you’ve got.” — Janis Joplin

“I wrote the story myself. It’s about a girl who lost her reputation and never missed it.” — Mae West

“Beware of the man who denounces women writers; his penis is tiny and he cannot spell.” – Erica Jong

“There is only one difference between a madman and me. I am not mad.” –Charlotte Brontë

“Please understand there is no pessimism in this house and we are not interested in the possibilities of defeat. They do not exist.” – Queen Victoria

“Whatever women do, they must do twice as well as men to be thought half as good. Fortunately, this is not difficult.” – Charlotte Whitton

“The minute you settle for less than you deserve, you get even less than you settled for.”  – Maureen Dowd, American Newspaper Columnist

“You don’t make weak men strong by making strong women weak.” – Unknown (appears to be an adaptation of Abraham Lincoln’s “You can’t make a weak man strong by making a strong man weak.”)

“When in doubt, make a fool of yourself. There is a microscopically thin line between being brilliantly creative and acting like the most gigantic idiot on earth. So what the hell, leap.” – Cynthia Heimel, American feminist writer

“Cautious, careful people, always casting about to preserve their reputation and social standing, never can bring about a reform.” – Susan B. Anthony

“It takes courage to push yourself to places that you have never been before, to test your limits, to break through barriers. And there came a time when the risk to remain tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.” – Anais Nin

“If particular care and attention is not paid to the ladies, we are determined to foment a rebellion, and will not hold ourselves bound by any laws in which we have no voice or representation.” – Abigail Adams

“I don’t want to get to the end of my life and find that I lived just the length of it. I want to have lived the width of it as well.” — Diane Ackerman, Poet

“Until all of us have made it, none of us have made it.” – Rosemary Brown, politician

“If I didn’t define myself for myself, I would be crunched into other people’s fantasies for me and eaten alive.” – Audre Lorde

  1. Brilliant, I’m so glad you drew attention to this!

  2. I love these quotes! Susan B Anthony is a woman after my own heart and I love to read the forward things she says. Her quote, I think, made me the happiest of them all.
