LiLo’s RTs will be held against her in a court of public opinion.

They're saying what? I just hit a button!

The headlines are outraged–Lindsay Lohan is comparing herself to that innocent Iranian woman sentenced to stoning! I really don’t care about Lindsay, but I do care about Sakine, so I clicked.

Linsday Lohan got a DUI a while back, and she’s done a bunch of stupid things like not show up to her hearings, or follow through on things the judge ordered her to do, like attend alcohol education classes. Durr. She was just in court again this week, and the judge has ordered to jail for her violations. The world weeps for her, really.

So, what did she say? She didn’t, she Tweeted. Here is exactly what she tweeted:

It is clearly stated in Article 5 of the U.N. Universal Declaration of Human Rights that….

The tiny link takes you a Newsweek article about Sakine, the Iranian woman.

Maybe I’m thick, but I don’t see the connection. That link looks like a pretty standard re-tweet to me. The bulk of the messages here are certainly referring to the ‘harsh’ sentencing she was given this week, but I hardly think she’s comparing herself to a victim of Shariah Law.

So what’s with inflammatory articles like this one at Hollywood Life?

That’s right, Lindsay tweeted last night, July 7 a link to a Newsweek article about tragic Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, imprisoned in Iran since May 2006, already subjected to 99 painful lashes and now facing death by stoning, for a crime, that her family insists she didn’t commit. As if adultery should be a crime punishable by death, anyway!

And that’s not the only insanely self-serving tweet by Lindsay. She also had the gall to imply that her human rights have been violated by her sentence of 90 days in jail and 90 days in rehab. “No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment,” she quoted from Article 5 of the U.N. Universal Declaration of human Rights!

Wow! Lindsay is so delusional and self centered, she actually thinks that her “victim-hood” puts her on par with some of the world’s biggest victims —  women and men ( many innocent) subjected to torture and execution.

The key word there is imply. LiLo is implying that US law is treating her unfairly, but she makes no commentary about the Newsweek link, just the ubiquitious “please RT.” So why is everyone so quick to assume that she believes her mistreatment is on par with Sakine’s?

I’m not a Lohan fan, but I don’t hate her, either. She’s a young woman who had a difficult youth, and is now on a path to self-destruction–just like a lot of other child stars. She’s done plenty of stupid things, and a good number of them show her to be selfish, etc. I’m not trying to defend her.

I’m pointing to a media that is so happy to have a Bad Girl making news (but clearly not enough!) that they make mountains from molehills, just because they can. “Lindsay is aware of persecution in Iran? That bitch!”

Maybe she genuinely wanted her nearly 800,000 followers to give a damn about this awful news story she’d just read. That’s a lot of sympathizers.

Right now, Lindsay is everyone’s favorite star to hate. And I grant them, she does a lot of shit that makes her a contemptible figure. But I don’t think this is one of them.

How is public censure supposed to have any impact on her if the noisiest has nothing to do with reality? When she was arrested for her DUI no one harped on her for being a danger to herself and others, they just got a nasty little thrill because she was in trouble, again. If the media has come down on her (and all other celebs caught drinking and driving) as a danger to herself and others, as a would-be murderer, maybe the message would have hit home. If not for her, maybe for millions of adults and teenagers and teens, who haven’t yet realized just how dangerous drinking and driving is.

No, we’ll just sit around and speculate about how LiLo’s being rude to the judge. We’ll talk about how she’s late to her hearing. We won’t hiss at her for not taking her sentencing seriously, as she should, but we will cry big alligator tears because she won’t be able to smoke in the jail! Then we’ll laugh cruelly.

The media is sending the wrong message. And it’s deliberately misinterpreting the rest. Lindsay’s re-tweet of a major news story should not have set off such alarm bells. Yes, she’s proven herself to be reprehensible in a number of ways, but what motivation does she have to change if everyone’s going to jump on her when she does do something good?

If you think this is too moralistic, and not enough to do with feminism, consider this. Lindsay’s effectively been typecast, as Whore, Lush, Closet Lesbian, and Ditz, among others. She’s firmly in those boxes, and no one in the media wants to let her out of them, because Generous, Intelligent, Confident and Controlled don’t sell papers.

Discuss.

One Comment to “LiLo’s RTs will be held against her in a court of public opinion.”

  1. I definitely agree. Its disgusting that the media jumps on every single thing that she and other young female starlets do. Male stars don’t seem to get the same scrutiny. But, that’s hardly a surprise since there’s such a double standard between how men and women, boys and girls, are treated in the media. Whenever LiLo does anything, whether its good or not, they pick it apart for the wrong reasons. She wants to raise awareness for an unfairly targeted, prosecuted, sentenced, and imprisoned Iranian woman? Well, somehow the media found a way to demonize that. She wants to help people and children in Haiti or Africa? Well, damn it, who cares, we all KNOW she’s just doing it to serve her own purpose. Because, after all, the media is run by a bunch of psychics, right?

The way the media has turned from what it used to be is disgusting. It used to be that the media was supposed to pride itself on bringing the truth to the people in as much of an unbiased fashion as possible so that the people get the real facts and can make up their own minds. That doesn’t sell, anymore, though. So, we get news outlets like Fox News and the gossip rags like The Enquirer and Hollywood Life that have no other purpose but to put their own biased spin on everything that they report on or comment on in order to make waves and sell a story. Although, I don’t know much about Hollywood Life, so maybe its unfair to compare it to Fox News. I know Fox News tends to totally make up some of its own news, but I don’t know enough about Hollywood Life to know if they do that. Still, you get what I mean.

Not every Tweet or Re-tweet on someone’s Twitter account is related to the last one. I certainly agree with you that LiLo has done a lot that is complaint worthy. But, that doesn’t make her evil incarnate.
